Can I sand down/off linoleum glue from my hardwood floors?

One of the bedrooms in my newly purchased fixer-upper has linoleum on the floor. After I tear up the linoleum, I need to get rid of the glue. I plan on sanding them and sealing the floor with a polyurethane until I can get the whole place done professionally. But I'm worried about the glue...Can I sand it off? What grade paper should I use? Will the glue stain my floor!? Any other precautions I should take?
